ALPS and Avery Dennison partner for both domestic and international label Waste Management Program.
Realizing all the challenges being faced by Label Industry for Liner and Matrix waste disposal, Association of Label Printers and Suppliers (ALPS) proactively started seeking solution. For their ‘Waste Management Program’, ALPS decided to partner with Avery Dennison who has been their predominant Industry partner with vast experience in the field of Label Waste Management both domestically and internationally.
The ‘ADvantage Waste Management’ program launch was held on November 09, 2019 at Delhi Lawn Tennis Association Club, N. Delhi and it was the result of the dedicated effort being put forward by ALPS and Avery Dennison team to provide sustainable solution to Label waste disposal.
The launch program was attended by almost 100 delegates. The program kick started with Mr. Gururaj Ballarwad, President ALPS welcoming the august gathering. “Land filling is not only harmful to the environment; it’s also rapidly becoming less feasible,” said Gururaj Ballarwad. “Also, with stringent govt. regulations being enacted around the world, communities are innovating to find alternatives and more sustainable ways of recycling. We’re proud to be collaborating with Avery Dennison and is able to reach the right audience with a solution that’s good for our Industry, environment and communities,” he added. The launch program was the result of one year of dedicated effort by ALPS to provide green and eco- friendly solution to treat the Label Waste.
The opening remark was delivered by Mr. Pankaj Bhardwaj, Senior Director & G.M Label & Graphic Material, Avery Dennison –South Asia. He said, “The program which is organized today is very unique and first of its kind event not only in India but possibly in South East Asia as well.”
“The Industry we are part of, generates a million tonne of waste ever year. Through Avery Dennison’s recycling program, we are making an active contribution to address today’s sustainability issues to make a better future,” he added.
“Avery Dennison has globally 08 sustainability objectives or goals which we are planning to fulfill by 2025 and one of the goal is to eliminate 70% of waste being generated in the value chain”, said Mr. Bhardwaj.
Ms. Priyanka Rathi Verma, Head Marcom & P.R, ALPS talked about when and how Association of Label Printers and Suppliers started working on this idea and which are the different models of ‘Label Waste Management’ available for members and how to become part of this program. She said, “After dedicated effort of one year and multiple Pilot runs, ALPS developed two models, one is, ‘No Cost Model’, ‘Cash from Trash’, which is achievable by recycling the segregated Label waste i.e by sorting of film matrix and the other is ‘Cost Model’, ‘Energy from Trash’, where waste segregation is not required and which will attracts logistic cost for converter.”
“In ‘NCM’, ‘waste is reused’ and it is reprocessed into alternate plastic articles like jug, board, chair etc. and if there is any contamination in material during this stage, it will be pushed from ‘No Cost Model’ to‘Cost Model’,” she explained.
“This is the phase 1 of our program and the later stages will involve further launch of the program in different cities and exploring different & effective ways of waste collection, segregation and recycling,” she added.
Mr. Parag Bagade, Head of Sustainability, Product Compliance & Advantage services, South Asia Pacific & Sub Saharan Africa, Avery Dennison, talked about the cost implications attached to the two models and the certificate to be issued by the recycler, ‘Shakti Plastic Industries’ to the ALPS members and others who will participate in the program. The collection centre’s pan India and other technical aspects were also discussed.
Team ALPS and Avery Dennison who worked tirelessly for this project was felicitated during the program. ALPS team comprised of Mr. Gururaj Ballarwad, President, Mr. Arunesh Bansal, Hon. General Secretary, Mr. Ajay Aggarwal, Vice President, Mr. Ashish Gupta, Hon. Treasurer and Mr. Harish Gupta, Managing Committee member, Sai ComCodes and Team Avery Dennsion involved Mr. Pankaj Bhardwaj, Mr. Parag Bagade and Mr. Bhupinder Singh.
The special guest during the launch event was Mr. Indrajit Ghosh, Managing Director of Dynamic Outreach & MGNG Global events LLp who was honoured by Mr. Gururaj Ballarwad, President ALPS for his contribution in the field of Recycling and Waste Management for past 33 years.
Mr. Ghosh is a member of Global Advisory Board of recycling Foundation & WASME. He is also a member of Materials Recycling Association of India, working very closely with PMO & Central Industry.
The program ended with interactive question answers session which involved Mr. Rahul Poddar, MD Shakti Plastic Industries and Mr. Parag Bagde, Avery Dennison answering and imparting all the information sought by hungry minded august gathering.
Mr. Ashish Gupta, Treasurer ALPS urged everyone to take the pledge to join this initiative of treating Label Waste responsibly and sustainably.
