Heidelberg India installs the cutting edge Speedmaster CX 92 four-colour press at Sonipat based Goyal Offset Works. The latest addition joins the fleet of Heidelberg presses at Goyal’s printing arsenal.
With a range of Heidelberg presses spanning from 4 to 10 colour configurations and a complete setup of post-press commercial solutions; the Goyal Offset Works has established itself as a leader in the print industry. The introduction of the Speedmaster CX 92 further solidifies their commitment to excellence.
Goyal Offset Works had its humble beginning with a hand-fed printing machine at Daya Basti (Inderlok), which used to be a residential cum commercial neighbourhood in the northeast of Delhi. The founding stone was laid in 1978 by Chiranji Lal Goyal, who later decided to move his business to a bigger facility of 400 sq. yards at the GT Karnal Road industrial area. Goyal added a used Heidelberg machine and five more Heidelberg machines in the coming years including a SORS and SORDZ (single and double colour) as his business grew.
Goyal’s son, Prince Goyal after graduating in Commerce, joined the business in 1994. At that time, they had a four-colour Planeta and a couple of 2 colour and single-colour Heidelberg. “My father provided me with the platform to further grow and accomplish things in this chosen field of commercial printing,” says Prince Kumar Goyal, Director at Goyal Offset Works.
As the demand from customers rose for higher quality products and conversion speed, Prince directly acquired a Heidelberg 4-colour plus coater CP-Tronic from a printer based in Italy. Another second-hand Heidelberg 5 colour (CP-Tronic) – which was added afterwards by acquiring it from a local dealer – couldn’t meet their expectations.
“In 2017 we shifted to the new premises in Kundli (Haryana), a booming industrial metropolis, north of Delhi as the space and managing the growing business was almost becoming unbearable with operations from several different units at GT Karnal Road,” shares Prince. Consequently, he consolidatedall the operations of the 3 different units (about 45000 sq feet) to have better control over their functioning.“For that,we decided to move to a bigger and better place in and around Delhi and moved to Kundli where several presses were already operating,” adds Prince.
“We custom built a space of about 5 lakh square foot covered area in Kundli to have ample space not only for present day-to-day operation but also for future expansion possibilities” says Prince. Presently Goyal Offset Works has two eight-colour machines, a 10-colour machine and 4 machines of four-colour at Kundli. While adding pre-used machines, Prince realized that a brand new machine would give them not only an advantage over their competitors but also the production quantity and quality that their customers expect. His latest addition is a brand new Heidelberg CX 92. “The CX 92 four-colour model of Heidelberg that we recently added to our arsenal has a very compact size. It is not only able to handle paper for publishers but also print covers efficiently without any problem,” reveals Prince.
Today, Goyal Offset is capable of producing 60,000 soft-bound books along with about 10,000 hardbound books in a day. On his decision to choose Heidelberg over other brands, Prince quickly points out that they had been a fan of the Heidelberg brand which is quite obvious from their shopfloor, which houses the majority of Heidelberg’s. This time he wanted to “have a taste of a brand new Heidelberg,” he quips, adding, “In fact, I believe that one should go in for new machines if they can especially, if the workload demands match the huge production and quality capabilities of these mammoths.”
With a plate consumption of about 250 plates per day, the prepress department has a busy schedule at Goyal Press. The plate production responsibility is carried in a twelve-hour shift on two machines – a BaysPrintCtCP and another Amsky (thermal) CtP. The new Heidelberg machine has already crossed 1.6 million impressions since its installation. This is indeed an impressive achievement for Goyal Offset Works.
The Speedmaster CX 92 can cater to a maximum print size of 650 mm × 940 mm (25.59 in × 37.01 in). The press has a maximum print format of 640 mm × 920 mm (25.20 in × 36.22 in) with a gripper margin of 10 mm – 12 mm (0.39 in – 0.47 in).
The cylinder undercut 0.12 mm (0.0047 in) and the distance from the lead edge of the plate to the lead edge of the print 43 mm (1.69 in) makes the plate cylinder much more efficient.
Publishing is Goyal Offset’s forte and they are catering to the publishing clients 24×7. This has somehow kept them from exploring other segments like the packaging. “Since we are pretty busy serving our publishing clientele, the thought of entering other possible fields like packaging is not on the cards presently,” says Prince. “As for our capacity to serve our future needs, I can say that we would be able to serve our customers’ needs for the coming 25 years, considering the investments we have made in infrastructure including machines,” he states, adding “We are planning for more investments in new machines including another new Heidelberg along with a folding machine and a perfect binding line to complement our production efficiency.”
“With the biggest infrastructure in the region in terms of covered area of over 1.75 lakh square feet after Replika Press, Goyal Offset is today a force to reckon with. Prince’s vision to take ahead the company is on a growth path that will be an inspiration for others in the industry,” pitches in Harish Gogia, Cluster Sales Head, North & East Region India, Nepal and Bhutan at Heidelberg India.
The possible future expansion for Goyal Offset could be in short-run digital printing as they are presently outsourcing this for their publishing customers. “We may add short-run digital printing capability in-house in future, though not immediately,” hints Prince.
The Speedmaster CX 92 blanket cylinder has a length of 840 mm x width of 1,052 mm (33.07 in × 41.42 in) metal-backed, the thickness of the blanket is 1.95 mm (0.077 in) while the packing sheet length is 735 mm x width 1,030 mm (28.94 in × 40.55 in).
The pile height feeder is 1,320 mm (51.97 in) and provides delivery at 1,295 mm (50.98 in). The Speedmaster CX 92 gives the maximum print output of 15,000 sph which suits Goyal Offset perfectly concerning their requirement.
Prince’s son Ramit has joined him to share his responsibilities. He is an able hand though he has just begun his journey in the printing and publishing world. “With the blessings of my father and now Ramit joining, we plan to grow at a constant pace in the coming years with the cooperation of the entire staff at our press and the support of all our suppliers including Heidelberg,”says Prince.
Presently standing tall at a turnover of about 50 crores annually and a staff strength of about 350 people, Prince expects to grow by one cm almost 20% every year, especially with the addition of the all-new Heidelberg.
