Technological advancements are revolutionizing the printing and packaging industries. Being a technology pioneer, FUJIFILM has a frontal role to play in answering these trends, Priyatosh Kumar discusses.
Our graphic industry is fast evolving. If we catch up with the latest trends shaping the industry, we come across personalization, on-demand printing and sustainability taking centre stage. Appraising these developments, Mr. Priyatosh Kumar, Associate Director and Head of Graphic Communications & Device Technology, FUJIFILM India, observes, “The trends shaping the future chiefly revolve around AI-driven design, digital transformation, and advancements in printing technology like inkjet and toner presses.”
“These trends address the growing demand for shorter print runs, faster turnarounds, and eco-friendly practices. I foresee these trends continuing, as businesses prioritize agility, quality, and environmental responsibility to stay competitive,” he elaborates.
The key technologies that define or catch up with these trends especially in the printing and packaging industries are technologies such as AI, automation, and advanced inkjet systems., “These technologies are pivotal – for instance, AI enhances design customization and process optimization, while automation streamlines complex workflows. Innovations in digital printing, like the FUJIFILM Jet Press FP 790 and Revoria PC 1120, are enabling high-quality, sustainable production; these technologies align perfectly with the industry’s demand for efficiency, versatility, and eco-friendliness,” explains Priyatosh.
Technological advancements are revolutionizing the printing and packaging industries by enabling rapid production, superior quality, and sustainability. Digital printing has introduced flexibility and precision, catering to demands for personalized and regionalized packaging. AI and smart workflows have reduced wastage and improved resource efficiency, fostering a more sustainable production ecosystem. Being a technology pioneer, FUJIFILM has a frontal role to play in answering these trends.
“FUJIFILM India offers a robust portfolio in both Digital and analogue space. Products like, the Jet Press FP 790 for flexible packaging and the Revoria PC 1120 for commercial printing are redefining the traditional methods in which standard long run CMYK was the norm,” asserts Priyatosh. In addition to that, to cater to the vast customer segment of Indian market, FUJIFILM offers production printing devices with different speeds – all targeted towards higher quality, productivity and environmental sustainability. FUJIFILM’s chemistry free processless plates in the analogue segment ensure longer lengths and higher sustainability. These products embody precision, speed, and environmental consciousness. “Finally, our XMF Workflow integrates offset and digital processes seamlessly, ensuring efficiency in prepress operations. These offerings are designed to meet the dynamic needs of the industry,” adds Priyatosh.
FUJIFILM – delivering sustainable and efficient solutions
“Sustainability,” asserts Priyatosh, “is a core principle at FUJIFILM. Our innovations, such as processless plates and water-based ink technologies, are designed to reduce environmental impact without compromising quality. We also focus on improving energy efficiency and minimizing waste, ensuring that our solutions are both sustainable and efficient for the industry.”
With the growing adoption of eco-friendly practices driven by regulatory fameworks and customer preferences in the printing industry, challenges such as higher initial costs, lack of awareness, and infrastructure limitations persist. Fujifilm is addressing these barriers by offering cost-effective, sustainable technologies and conducting educational initiatives to promote green printing practices,” underlines Priyatosh.
Green innovations have a greater role to play in the printing ecosystem while addressing sustainability. According to Priyatosh, “Green innovations, such as water-based inks and processless plates, are reshaping the printing ecosystem by reducing chemical usage and waste.” Talking of FUJIFILM’s commitment to sustainability, he says, through Sustainable Value Plan 2030, the company reinforces its role as a leader in eco-friendly printing solutions. “We aim to provide technologies that balance productivity and environmental stewardship,” he states.
Growth prospects of sustainability in Indian industry
Sustainability holds immense growth potential in India’s printing sector. Increased awareness and government policies supporting green practices are driving this shift. “FUJIFILM is focused on expanding its eco-friendly product line and engaging with stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices,” declares Priyatosh.
As of growth areas, the Indian market offers significant growth opportunities in sectors like packaging, commercial printing, and regional printing hubs in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. FUJIFILM is investing in these areas by introducing advanced printing solutions, strengthening distribution networks, and forging local partnerships to cater to diverse market needs.
“In recent years, the adoption of sustainable technologies in the printing industry has grown by reflecting a strong shift towards eco-conscious practices,” notes Priyatosh, quickly adding, “FUJIFILM’s solutions have contributed significantly to this trend, with widespread implementation of processless plates and water-based inks across our client base.”
Today, times are changing. Sustainability standards, once considered high-end concept, are gaining common acceptance. Priyatosh says, “Sustainability is transitioning from a high-end concept to a common standard, driven by increasing awareness and demand for eco-friendly solutions.” When asked how to expand its scope, he recommends – industry-wide collaboration, government incentives, and educational initiatives to demonstrate the long-term benefits of sustainable practices.”
It is not an objective attainable singlehandedly. Industry coordination with other technology providers is the need of the hour to push the idea of sustainability in different areas that are part of the over-all sustainability model. “Collaboration is key to achieving holistic sustainability. FUJIFILM actively partners with technology providers and industry bodies to promote green practices, even in areas outside our direct expertise. These partnerships amplify the impact of sustainable initiatives across the entire printing ecosystem,” reveals Priyatosh.
Additionally, educating users is a priority for FUJIFILM which organizes workshops, webinars, and training programs to demonstrate the benefits of sustainable technologies. “Our focus is on empowering clients with knowledge and tools to implement green practices effectively, ensuring long-term success,” states Priyatosh.
“FUJIFILM India is dedicated to driving innovation and sustainability in the graphic arts industry. Our mission is to empower businesses with cutting-edge solutions that deliver quality, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. We believe the future of printing is green, and we are committed to leading this transformation,” he concludes.
